Think quick: what does the Ford Mustang have in common with Tiffany & Co.? Well, according to this 1964 ad for the iconic pony car, the Mustang is a brand new breed of car while Tiffany & Company has, for generations, been a symbol of beauty and elegance. The connection is that Tiffany, which has never before honored any automobile, has honored the Ford Mustang with a gold medal award for excellence in American design. An interesting tie-in, wouldn’t you say?
The commercial goes on to tout the excitingly-versatile, unexpectedly-practical Mustang with its long list of options that make the car even more luxurious or give it even more sports-car performance. The tagline (which we love) is “unexpected car at an unexpected price”.
To think that the ‘Stang, back in those days, was a mere $2,368 f.o.b. (freight on board to) Detroit is rather unimaginable. But that’s what cars sold for in those days… nice cars, at that.
The Motrolix Take
This ad, and many like it from the 60s and 70s, show just how much shorter the attention spans of the public have become. This ad comes in at a minute in length, while marketers today would be lucky to get your attention for a mere 15 seconds. Think about it.
Even so, we think Ford should go back to using this motto for the Mustang: “See the unexpected: the Ford Mustang, now at your Ford dealers.”
