Feature Spotlight: The Ford Mustang And Its Color-Smart Fuel Gauge

To say that yours truly is a big Ford Mustang fan may be an understatement. Recently, I noticed something interesting on my 2012 Stang: as I continued to run out of gas, I received the usual “fill ‘er up” indicator light and “X miles to 0” warning message in the driver’s information center. But then, something interesting happened.

When my fuel range hit 10 miles, the backlight behind the fuel meter turned a bright red. It was as if it was telling me, “Hey bozo, did you forget what I was trying to tell you for the past 50 miles?”

Overall, this makes for a nice touch in a segment traditionally known for lackluster dreadful interiors — and increases owner delight that much more. Heck, this is the first time I’ve ever seen the fuel meter turn a different color (independently) in any vehicle.

And just in case you were wondering why I had the ‘Stang down to such a low fuel level, well, I was just curious how much reserve the tank had… you know, just in case. Now if you’ll excuse me, it’s time to run to the trunk and pull out that red canister.
