Arriving on the heels of the all-new 2013 MKZ midsize sedan, the 2015 Lincoln MKC becomes the second new vehicle in Lincoln’s strategy to expand its lineup and make itself more competitive in the face of ever-increasing competition. In fact, the 2015 MKC is one of four new Lincolns planned to be released by 2016. But the arrival of the CUV comes at a critical time in the industry, since the MKC is very much about building the right product at the right time, according to Ford.
That’s because the MKC is entering the compact premium utility vehicle space at a time when the segment is growing faster than any other vehicle segment. Driven by new luxury buyers who are coming into affluence as well as by current luxury owners who are moving from larger vehicles to smaller ones as their life desires change, the segment has grown by 25 percent since 2012, and by more than 200 percent since 2009, according to a Lincoln news release.
As part of its plan to grow sales, Lincoln is looking for the 2015 MKC to help attract a younger, more diverse customer while positioning the brand to be more successful in desirable markets on the East and West coasts.
The Motrolix Take
That’s a sound strategy. The question now is whether Lincoln will be able to sell the MKC in any sizable quantities. Looks like only time will tell.
