Ford Confirms Return Of Falcon XR8 Sedan For Late 2014

Ford has announced that its iconic Falcon XR8 performance sedan will return to the Australian Falcon line-up in late 2014. The release of the high-performance model will coincide with the market introduction of updates to the 2014 Falcon and Territory, which should bring updated styling similar to what’s seen on the fifth-gen Mondeo.

“We have received a lot of interest and continued requests from Falcon fans to bring back the XR8,” said Ford Australia Vice President of Marketing, Sales and Service Graeme Whickman.

Even though the highly-anticipated XR8 will be available through Ford’s full network of dealers in Australia, the announcement is bittersweet, as it comes on the heels of Ford’s decision to shutter Australian manufacturing operations, and by association, the locally-engineered and manufactured Falcon line.

“Re-introducing the XR8 sedan, packaged in our updated Falcon, will make our renowned locally-engineered and manufactured V8 engine available to a broader group of people.”

But as Ford reintroduces the Falcon XR8 to its portfolio, the Ford Performance Vehicles (FPV) range will retire. According to a Ford news release, the automaker “has planned a series of actions during 2014 to ensure the final FPV models celebrate the brand’s iconic status”, with further details being provided at a later date.

“FPV has been very successful for the last 12 years and our relationship with Tickford for many years before that,” said Whickman adding that more details of the final FPV models and the XR8 will become available in “the coming months”.
