Ford Motor Company Moves To Trademark “Model E”

On December 3, 2013, the Ford Motor Company filed for trademark rights with the United States Patent and Trademark Office for the word “Model E”. Currently assigned serial number 86133442, the filing is categorized in the Automobiles section of Goods and Services.

The Motrolix Take

This trademark filing is interesting, to say the least. Suffice to say that Ford isn’t planning to replace its current vehicle naming structure with the word “Model” followed by a single letter. Notably, Ford never officially made a Model E — making this filing rather interesting.

Ford, in fact, didn’t make a Model D, either, but it did make a Model C from 1904-1905 as well as a Model C Ten from 1935-1937. A delivery car based on the Model C was designated Model E by some enthusiasts, but Ford referred to it officially as “Delivery Car” in its catalogs.

All this makes us wonder about the reason Ford is filing for this trademark in the first place. The Blue Oval is almost definitely not going to introduce a production vehicle called “Model E”, so the only purpose of the trademark that we can think of is for the purpose of a concept car that it plans on unveiling in the future.

Do you have a better reason that Ford is seeking rights to the trademark? We’d love to hear about it in the comments.
