The History Of Audi quattro, Explained: Video

Although the first Audi quattro was unveiled on March 4, 1980, the quattro story actually began many years earlier, when a group of engineers led by Ferdinand Piëch set out to prove that a four-wheel drive system could be made for use in a sports car that didn’t require a heavy, inefficient transfer case. The car that introduced quattro to the world was the legendary Audi quattro, a 200 horsepower 5-cylinder monster with two doors and a hatch that delivered unbelievable performance.

The video below is the introduction to /INSIDE QUATTRo — a new video series by /DRIVE that will take us inside quattro GmbH, a fully-owned subsidiary of Audi responsible for building the hottest Audi performance (RS4, RS6, and RS7) and race cars. The teaser focuses on Audi’s success in the WRC, during which the Four-Ringed brand established itself and the quattro name in motorsports alongside such racing notables as Walter Röhrl, Stig Blomqvist, Hannu Mikkola and Michèle Mouton, all by using four wheels to get traction in the dirt, rather than two.
