F-150 May Get Diesel Engine Option, Super Duty To Be Aluminium-Free

Even though the 2015 Ford F-150 isn’t out yet, The Blue Oval is working on early and mid-cycle updates for the new pickup, including a diesel engine option, according to a report from The Truth About Cars.

The 3.0-liter V6 diesel, which has been code named Lion, will reportedly be offered in the new F-150 by 2018. As it runs out, Ford had a diesel for the F-150 in the works years ago, but those plans fell victim to the 2008 global recession. TTAC also reports that the 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 will have about 290-300 horsepower, though torque figures haven’t surfaced as of yet. A new 10-speed transmission is expected to arrive around the same time as the diesel.

Despite the aluminium body panels on the 2015 F-150, rumors are circulating that the next-generation of Super Duty pickups will not utilize aluminium in its body. It isn’t clear why Ford has made this decision to make the larger Super Duty trucks without the weight-saving material. Stay tuned as we learn more.
