Ford Recalls Nearly 700,000 Vehicles Over Airbag Software Glitch

Ford has announced it is recalling new Escape crossovers and C-max hybrids in North America to remedy two separate safety problems.

The problem: A software glitch in affected models can stop the side curtain air bags from inflating in a rollover accident. The second problem is exclusive to Escape models and involves the door handles which may bind and stop the door from latching properly.

Affected vehicles: 2013 and 2014 model year C-Max hybrids and Escape crossovers are involved in the recall.

Number of vehicles affected: More than 692,000 models in total are affected. Around 583,000 are located in the U.S. while 89,500 are in Canada and another 20,000 are in Mexico.

The fix: Dealers will reprogram the air bag control module for free. In the case of the Escape, the dealer will also inspect the door handles and reposition them if needed. No crashes or injuries have been reported as a result of either issue.

Contacts: Owners may contact Ford at 1-800-392-3673.
