2015 VW Golf GTI Wins ‘Cheap Speed Challenge’

Cars.com, USA Today, and MotorWeek have gotten together and created the “Cheap Speed Challenge,” which focuses on compact coupes, hatchbacks, and sedans that cost less than $30,000. Out of the bunch, the 2015 Volkswagen Golf GTI bested seven other contenders.

The challenge included testing eight vehicles against each other in a number of performance criteria (0-60 mph times, quarter-mile times, 60-0 braking distance, professional road course testing, 200 miles of real-world driving and round-robin driving) over a five-day period, with additional performance-focused testing completed on a racetrack.

According to Executive Editor at Cars.com, Joe Wiesenfedler, the GTI is the all-around best performer. “Not only does the all-new 2015 Volkswagen Golf GTI offer the best performance bang for the buck, it is also one of the most comfortable. The GTI outperformed most cars in just about every test we conducted.”

Vice President of Product Marketing for Volkswagen of America, Joerg Sommer, relayed the German automaker’s enthusiasm after winning the competition. “We are thrilled that the Golf GTI has been recognized by such expert media as a high-performing vehicle that offers an incredible value, and we thank the voters for their choice.”

With the 2015 GTI’s 2.0L turbocharged direct-injected engine, it makes 210 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque – 10 hp and 51 lb-ft of torque higher than the previous-generation GTI.
