Oh boy, do we have a tasty treat for you this afternoon: a video of the Porsche 918 Spyder lapping the track at Virginia International Raceway to get a Lightning Lap time in the hands of Car and Driver‘s KC Colwell.
The 2015 Porsche 918 Spyder achieves a lap time of 2 minutes, 43.1 seconds around the “American Nürburgring,” making it the fastest production car ever tested for Car and Driver‘s Lightning Lap feature. By almost a three second margin. Only the 2009 Mosler MT900S comes close, at 2 minutes, 45.9 seconds.
As far as driving journalists go, KC Colwell is about as competent as they come; he’s consistently the driver trusted with the fastest, highest horsepower cars at Car and Driver‘s annual Lightning Lap. Yet even he has to quickly employ countersteer at a few key points on the track to keep the combined 887 horsepower of the Porsche 918 Spyder in-check. But the AWD system in the car means that he can jump on the throttle much sooner through the corner, maintaining consistently mind-blowing exit speeds.
There does seem to be a lot of audible tire squealing throughout most of the corners, which is either a symptom of microphone placement and lack of sound-deadening during recording, or perhaps indicative that there is another one or two seconds still to be had from the Porsche 918 Spyder.
