Tesla Model D To Be AWD Model S?

Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk has sent the automotive world into a tizzy following a photograph he tweeted last week of a garage door, stamped with a large “D”, opening on a car that certainly looks an awful lot like the existing Model S flagship. The young executive certainly has a flair for the dramatic, which some have likened to that of the late Steve Jobs.

Meanwhile, many in-the-know have speculated as to the introduction of an AWD version of the Model S. Could the Tesla Model D be this AWD car?

It seems likely. As Musk said on Wednesday at the Vanity Fair New Establishment Summit, “One of the things is already there, and people just don’t realize it.” We suspect that may be a reference to the “already there” Model S, which (as speculated) is likely gaining an all-wheel drivetrain, to be badged as the Tesla Model D.

The official announcement is set to come as soon as this evening, when CEO Elon Musk is also set to announce another coming technology: one that will reportedly help keep drivers from drifting off the road.

Stay tuned for more information as it’s made available.
