When Carroll Shelby introduced the Shelby GT350 Mustang in 1965, American road racers embraced it. But for the select few professionals who were serious about competing with this fastback, Shelby American created the competition-bred 37 Shelby Mustang GT350R for them. With that inspiration, it’s quite possible Ford will be creating a Shelby Mustang GT350R version of the recently announced 2016 Shelby Mustang GT350.
As reported by Motor Authority, hold your breath till January for the North American International Auto Show and we may discover what Ford has planned for the Shelby Mustang GT350. The Shelby Mustang GT350R is expected to be more potent version with bigger brakes, aerodynamic tweaks, bigger tires, and everything else you’d expect for a track car. Motor Authority reasons this may explain why the GT350 spotted at Nürburgring this past summer featured upgrades that didn’t appear in its Los Angeles debut last week.
So will this be Ford’s return (to use a tennis term) for the Z/28? Or will the Shelby Mustang GT350R have a slightly different target? Competition improves the breed, so we think this rumored Shelby should whet our appetites regardless of the target.
