Ford introduced the revamped 2016 Ford Explorer at the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show, giving it a facelift, shuffling the powerplants (resulting in increased towing capability), and adding a new, range-topping Platinum trim level.
We explored Ford’s stalwart crossover at the show, but we discovered no surprises, since there’s really no reason for Ford to mess with success. Could the automaker have managed a complete redesign of the Explorer? Sure, but at this point, it seems that it was much more cost-effective to marginally improve an already-winning formula, not to mention that the Explorer was only due for a midcycle refresh, and that Ford likely has money tied up in the all-new 2015 F-150.
