Alonso Was Set To Race For Porsche At Le Mans, Reports Say

Some of the biggest news in Formula 1 last year was in regards to where former Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso would choose to continue his F1 career. Everyone wanted the spaniard in their driver’s seat, it seemed, but it was Honda and McLaren who had the most attractive offer, securing the seasoned pilot in time for the 2015 season.

Honda and McLaren weren’t the only manufactureurs with vested interest in Alonso. According to German motoring publication Auto Motor Und Sport, Porsche wanted him to pilot their 919 Hybrid race car during the 24 Hours of Le Mans this year. Alonso was on board, set to drive Porsche’s third car, until Honda put a stop to it.

It’s not exactly clear why Honda wanted Alonso out of the Porsche program, but we’re guessing they don’t want their new star driver hurt or distracted during their official re-entry into the world’s top-tier motorsports series. Meanwhile, Porsche is tasked with finding a driver who can live up to the expectations left by one of motorsprots’ most talented drivers.
