Was The Ford GT Le Mans Racer Spied In The Background Of This Video?

Ford Motor Company threw quite the wrench at the 2015 North American International Auto Show by revealing the 2016 Ford GT — a modern reincarnation of its glorious GT supercar. And while The Blue Oval’s new supercar was the starlet of the show, with members of the media and attendees alike busy salivating over the blue beast, it was then announced that the American supercar would grace the cover of the sixth installment of Forza Motorsport 6.

That is a fitting match for the Ford GT, as Forza becomes the Xbox alternative to Sony’s Gran Turismo. Now, Forza has published a video providing a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the Ford GT, where various executives and designers explain what went into the making the legendary car. The whole video is worth watching just for the educational value alone, but something in particular stands out in the background.

At the 1:49 mark, the video shows a few renderings of what appears to be a Ford GT a lá Le Mans specifications. The renderings feature the new GT, complete with reshaped lines and air intakes, as well as a bigger rear wing and a central rear fin per the latest LMP1 prototypes.

For Ford, a return to Le Mans — the greatest road race on earth — would be fitting, as 2016 marks the 50th anniversary of the original GT40 achieving its masterful 1-2-3 finish in the 24-hour endurance race. We can only hope that the team will perform up to snuff. But hey, no pressure.

For now, all we know is that Ferrari, Porsche, and Audi should once again fear this mass of Detroit steel… or, in this case, carbon fiber and aluminum. Stay tuned as we bring you more information on the possible return of the Ford GT to Le Mans. In the meantime, have a look at the video.
