Lewis Hamilton Shows Off His 1967 Shelby Mustang GT500

Lewis Hamilton, last year’s Formula 1 world champion, may race for Mercedes-Benz, but his real interest lies with vintage Fords, it seems. The 30-year old recently showed off his 1967 Shelby Mustang GT500 on his Instagram and Twitter accounts by posting an image of him and his dog Coco posing next to the red pony car.

It’s important to note that while Hamilton’s GT500 appears to be one of the famous Eleanor models from the film Gone In 60 Seconds, the appearance is actually the result of a replica done by Oklahoma-based customization shop Classic Recreations to his ’67 Shelby GT500. Referred to as the GT500CR, the car is built using authentic Shelby parts and is registered with the official Shelby database.

And though it may look vintage, the GT500CR is a modern Mustang beneath the surface. Classic Recreations has given it a coilover suspension, modern disc brakes and the 5.0-liter Coyote V8 used in the modern-day Mustang GT, among other components.

Maybe this is Lewis’ way of lifting his spirits following his recent break-up with long-time girlfriend and Pussycat Dolls star Nicole Scherzinger. Or maybe not. Nevertheless, what a nice car.
