Refreshed Ford Police Interceptor To Report For Duty At 2015 Chicago Auto Show

Ford has just released a teaser image of what some drivers will soon see in their rearview — a refreshed Police Interceptor Utility. The automaker will show off the vehicle at the upcoming 2015 Chicago Auto Show next week.

After Ford officially killed off the Panther platform, which underpinned the beloved Ford Crown Victoria, Mercury Grand Marquis and Lincoln Town Car, the company left a hole in the hearts of police departments across the world with the passing of the Crown Vic PPV. It quickly stepped up and bestowed the Taurus with a Police Interceptor treatment, calling it the Police Interceptor Sedan. It was then followed up with a police-focused Explorer called the Police Interceptor Utility.

And now with a refreshed 2016 Ford Explorer, it only makes sense to give it the police treatment. The teaser image seems to clearly represent the fresh-faced 2016 Explorer with police livery. Besides the sole teaser photo and detail-less announcement, no other information is readily available. But what we know about the refreshed 2016 Ford Explorer provides us with some clues about what its police variant may have in store.

Currently, police departments ordering the Police Interceptor Utility may choose from among two engines — the base 3.5-liter V6 making 290 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque and the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6, essentially turning the full-size crossover into a CUV variant of the Taurus SHO. What we can expect from this newest Police Interceptor Utility is the addition of 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine making 285 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque. It’s even possible that the new boosted four-pot replaces the base naturally-aspirated V6.

Stay tuned as we bring you official information on the new/refreshed Ford Police Interceptor Utility next week from the 2015 Chicago Auto Show.
