If you find the multiple vehicle choices offered to you by car rental agencies to be confusing and the rental process a headache, Silvercar may be right up your alley. The small agency is looking to change the way Americans rent cars by negating the need for a storefront or service counter with a handy new smartphone app.
All of Silvercar’s rental vehicles will be silver Audi A4 sedans, which will be available for a constant flat rate of $89 on weekdays and $59 on weekends. The only way to rent one of their Audis, which are currently available from eight different airports across the U.S., is to use their app, effectively doing away with any paperwork. This, combined with the lack of much employee presence at airports, allows the company to offer a premium rental car experience at discounted prices.
Because your rental car will be an Audi and not a base model Ford Fusion, Silvercar offers GPS, WiFi and satellite radio for free in all of its cars, and there’s also no fee to add a second driver. In the future, the app may be able to record customers’ preferences like seating and mirror positions or radio station preferences, for example.
If you need anymore clarification as to what Silvercar is all about, their mission statement should clear the air:
“We’re an early stage startup that is, frankly, sick of the typical rental car experience. You know, the one where you wait in line, get upsold, only to end up with a run down, econo-class Dodge Neon that has a faint smell of ‘is that ham?’”
Avis Budget, Enterprise, and Hertz currently control 98% of the rental car agency, but Silvercar confidently proclaims their exceptional customer service (partially provided by the lack of human interaction involved with renting one of their cars) combined with their appeal to younger consumers will help them steal market share. We don’t know about that, but we do know we’ll probably find ourselves in a silver Audi next time we have to fly to Austin or Los Angeles.
