Volkswagen Sweden Backs Two World WRC Teams

Hot on the heels of Sébastien Ogier’s recent success in Rally Mexico, another geographic arm of the Volkswagen brand — Volkswagen Sweden — has announced plans to back a pair of teams in a similar motorsports series: the 2015 FIA World Rallycross Championship.

Topi Heikkinen (Finland) and P-G Andersson (Sweden) will drive for Marklund Motorsport, while Johan Kristofferson (Sweden) and Tord Linnerud (Norway) will compete in a new-for-2015 team called Kristofferson Motorsport team (KMS).

Marklund Motorsport

  • Topi Heikkinen (Finland)
  • P-G Andersson (Sweden)

Kristofferson Motorsport

  • Johan Kristofferson (Sweden)
  • Tord Linnerud (Norway)

Both teams, who develop and race their vehicles independently, will pilot four-wheel drive Volkswagen Polo Rs churning out roughly 560 horses via a twin-turbocharged, transversally-mounted 2.0L. Regulated to weigh a minimum 1,300 kilograms (2,866 pounds), the subcompact pocket rockets can hit 60 mph in an eye-watering 2.1 seconds (depending on gearing).

“The World Rallycross Championship enjoys increasing popularity: the races are compact, spectacular and varied. With Marklund Motorsport and Kristoffersson Motorsport, Volkswagen is represented by two extremely professional privateer teams,” said Jost Capito, Head of Volkswagen Motorsport.

“The line-up and the calendar promise an exciting World RX season and we are confident that the Volkswagen drivers will be up there battling for races and the championship.”

The first race of the 2015 FIA World RallyCross Championship season will be held in Montalegre, Portugal, from April 24-26.
