Audi Stays Plugged In To Hybrids As Market Makes Shift Towards EVs

While Audi seems to believe heavily in the future of the electric car, producing vehicles like the recently introduced R8 e-tron, company CEO Rupert Stadler recently told Automotive News in an interview the company is keeping its focus in plug-in hybrid vehicles.

Stadler said hybrid vehicles will likely be consumer’s preferred vehicle of choice over all-electric cars for the next 10 to 15 years. Plug-in hybrid powertrains offer further range and are better for both short urban commutes and longer road trips, Stadler explained.

Even though he’s not entirely confident in the immediate future of electric vehicles, Stadler recognized consumers may be more likely to buy them as the charging infrastructure becomes more dense and more fast-charging stations are available. Additionally, the automaker plans to roll out its Tesla Model X-rivaling EV crossover by early 2018, so it is at least somewhat convinced EVs will gain in popularity in the near future.
