Driving Instructor Illustrates The Advantages Of Porsche Chassis Technologies: Video

The breadth of means by which the physics of the modern automobile are controlled during cornering is becoming a cluttered field, what with the advent of technologies such as Active Kinematics Control, Continuous Damper Control, Magnetorheological Dampers, both “real” and “faux” torque-vectoring, etc. This video from Porsche quiets a handful of our countless questions, effectively demonstrating three Porsche chassis technologies: Torque-Vectoring Plus, Sport Chrono, and Dynamic Chassis Control.

Our test subjects for today’s demonstration: three differently-equipped models of the Type-991 Porsche 911 Carrera S.

Of the three aforementioned Porsche chassis technologies, Porsche Torque-Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus) is perhaps the most basic; it comes as standard on all Carrera S models, and as an option on the base 911. PTV’s tools are the right and left rear brakes; its inputs are steering angle, steering speed, throttle position, yaw rate, and vehicle speed. By reading these inputs continuously, the PTV computer can actuate either of the rear brakes strategically to limit torque, sending it to the opposite wheel on the same axle.

The second 911 Carrera S tested has both the PTV Plus and Sport Chrono Package Porsche chassis technologies. Sport Chrono adds active engine mounts to the mix, along with some extra performance-oriented displays, a more rev-happy and rapid shift strategy for the available PDK dual-clutch transmission, and Launch Control.

Finally, the third 911 in the test features the above Porsche chassis technologies, with the addition of Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC). That adds active front and rear anti-roll bars, manipulated by hydraulic motors based on steering angle and lateral acceleration. Basically, the anti-roll bars can adjust continuously, producing forces which counteract the car’s swaying forces. The effect is flatter cornering with more consistent road contact.

How much do each of these Porsche chassis technologies contribute to the end goal – a 911 Carrera S with handling confidence and unshakeable poise? Watch the video to find out.
