Volkswagen World Rally Championship driver Sebastien Ogier has been on fire in 2015 with six wins in the first nine rounds of racing. Things nearly went wrong for the Frenchman in Australia Thursday, however, putting his VW Polo R WRC on two wheels and almost rolling it in qualifying.
Ogier was taking a tight right hander when he cut the inside of the corner two close and popped his Polo R up on two wheels. He was luckily able to save the car from flipping and continue on his way with only slight damage.
Not only was Ogier able to keep racing, he posted the fastest qualifying time for the Coates Hire Rally Australia ahead of his teammates Andreas Mikkelsen and Jari-Matti Latvala, who were second and third fastest, respectively.
“We had a little stunt moment on the first corner, on two wheels. Very slow but could have been a roll,” Ogier told FOX. “Luckily the reflexes cut in to open steering in the other direction, like a spin, but after that, I am happy with everything.”
“The car feels good, but the thing is, I expect a very difficult first loop here, but I’ll try my best,” he added. “The roads are beautiful and the last two years were very successful for me, I won the two, so of course I am happy to come back here.”
