Ferrari 458 Speciale 4.5L V8 Named Best Performance Engine, Best Engine Above 4.0L

The Ferrari 458 Speciale has topped two categories in the annual Engine of the Year Awards for its 4.5-liter naturally aspirated V8. The announcement marks the fifth consecutive year a Ferrari engine has been recognized by Engine of the Year organizers and is the automaker’s 15th mention in the awards’ 17 year history.

Both the Performance Engine of the Year and the Above 4.0-liter awards went to Ferrari’s 4.5-liter V8. In this day and age of downsizing and turbocharging, the naturally aspirated 4.5-liter Ferrari F136 V8 is a breath of fresh air. Seen as the last hurrah for non-turbo Ferrari V8s, the F136 engine produces an incredible 605 horsepower from 9,000 RPM, making it the most power dense NA engine of all time.

The Ferrari V8 took home both the Performance Engine of the Year and Above 4.0-liter awards in 2011, 2012 and 2014. It was omitted in 2013 in favor of another Ferrari engine, the 740 horsepower 6.2-liter V12 found in the F12 Berlinetta.

The jury for the Engine of the Year Awards is made up of automotive journalists from 32 different nations. Criteria for the engines include fuel economy, smoothness, performance, sound and drivability, among other factors.
