Mustang EcoBoost Attracts Younger, Eco Conscious Buyers In California

The optional 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine in the Ford Mustang EcoBoost is attracting younger buyers to the nameplate, the automaker said citing J.D. Power PIN data. This in part helped it to achieve the title of best-selling sports car in America in 2015 and also certified it as the best-selling sports car in the world.

Mustang loyalists are still attracted to the 5.0-liter V8 variant of the car, however the 310-horsepower, 2.3-liter engine is helping to bring new, younger customers into the showrooms – especially in Southern California. There’s a 56 percent take rate on the four-banger motor in SoCal, with half of those sales going to millenials.

“In Southern California – Mustang’s hottest market – buyers are younger,” explained Ford sales analyst Erich Merkle. “Of all buyers, 40 percent are Millennials, but these younger buyers account for 47 percent of EcoBoost Mustang sales. The EcoBoost option has flipped a switch with young buyers.”

The average amount of time a car spends on a dealer lot from when it’s delivered to when it’s sold is about 60 days industry wide, however the Mustang currently spends an average of 16 days on lots in SoCal, making it the most popular market for the pony car.
