2015 Ford Expedition, 2015 Ford Expedition EL
The Ford Expedition SUV is a highly-profitable product line for the Ford Motor Company. Over the last few years, however, The Blue Oval has been lagging behind General Motors’ Chevrolet Tahoe/Suburban and GMC Yukon/Yukon XL when it comes to full-size SUV sales, with The General’s offerings making up well over half of all sales in the segment. In addition, GM’s recent unveiling of the completely overhauled 2015 Tahoe, 2015 Suburban, and 2015 Yukon threatens to grow its lead over Ford even further. As such, The Blue Oval is working on a refresh to the Expedition and Expedition EL for the 2015 model year.
Here is some of the information we’ve been able to gather about the 2015 Expedition. Please keep in mind that this page is a work-in-progress and will be updated on a regular basis as we await the official 2015 Expedition announcement from Ford.
Now in its third generation, the Ford Expedition is a well-mannered and capable full-size sports utility vehicle. Over the years, however, it has become relegated to use as a people hauler, rather than a true off-roader. The current-gen Expedition and Expedition EL have been around in their present form since 2007, and it’s time for an update. That’s exactly what the 2015 models will bring, with updates to the exterior, interior, power trains, and convenience features.
Notably, the introduction of the 2015 Expedition and 2015 Expedition EL will not mark the fourth generation of the vehicle. Instead, it will be an all-encompassing update to the existing third-gen SUV.
What
A refreshed, more modern, and more fuel-efficient Expedition and extended-length Expedition EL.
Why
To keep up with rival offerings from General Motors, namely the Chevrolet Tahoe, Suburban, and Yukon.
When
We expect the refreshed Expedition and Expedition EL to be unveiled in 2014 as 2015 model year vehicles. A debut at the 2014 Chicago Auto Show in February 2014 is likely, as is an on-sale date sometime in mid- to late-2014.
Notable Improvements
Expected improvements over the original third-generation model include:
- Refreshed exterior styling
- Refreshed interior
- Improved technology inside the cabin, with the introduction of the improved MyFord Touch system as well as proximity key with push-button start
- A powertrain overhaul, with Ford’s 3.5 liter EcoBoost V6 a likely candidate to join or replace the current 5.4 liter Triton V8
The updated 2015 Ford Expedition will continue riding on Ford’s T1 full-size SUV vehicle architecture.
Specifications
Full specs TBA.
Engines
The 2015 Expedition is expected to offer the following engines:
- 5.4 liter naturally-aspirated Triton V8
- 3.5 liter turbo-charged EcoBoost V6
Whether Ford will offer both the EcoBoost V6 and the current models’ Triton V8 concurrently is unknown at this point.
The design of the 2015 Expedition will be updated. Possible styling elements of the Ford Atlas Concept that previewed the next-generation 2015 F-150 are likely. LED lighting as well as ergonomics improvements throughout are a certainty.
The 2015 Expedition and Expedition EL will continue to compete in the mainstream full-size SUV segment against the:
- Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban
- GMC Yukon and Yukon XL
- Toyota Sequoia
- Nissan Armada
We expect the 2015 Expedition to continue carrying a base price in the low $40,000, and be configurable all the way up to the mid-$60,000s for the flagship model.
The 2015 Expedition will likely become available in North America beginning in the summer of fall of 2014 as a 2015 model. Availability outside North America will limited to individually-exported models.
Ford will continue manufacturing the updated 2015 Expedition at the Louisville plant in Kentucky.
