Spied: 2013 Ford Escape (Kuga)

While we don’t know whether Ford will use the Escape name for its successor to the aging compact crossover, we do know that it will look nothing like the car it will replace. The new Escape will trade the boxy design of the current model for the rakish lines of the Vertrek Concept recently unveiled at NAIAS. And as luck would have it, Autoblog’s spy photographers have caught Ford’s next-gen compact crossover in mule form… again.

While the camouflage on the mule’s rear end gives it a boxy appearance, we’d wager that it was placed there on purpose (for people like us) to masquerade the vehicle’s arching hatch. Not to be overlooked are those multispoke wheels — most likely for the higher trim levels — as well as the dreadful-looking steelies on the second mule — probably reserved for the base S and (slightly better than base) SE packages.

But enough with the conjecture — here are some things we know for sure about the Blue Oval’s upcoming compact CUV due to bow in 2012 as a 2013 model: it will ride on the same global C platform used by the new Focus and C-MAX (not the Transit Connect, as Autoblog would have you believe). And it will also drop the current model’s V6 powerplant for a set of four bangers — most likely the 2.5-liter Duratec at the low end and either the 1.6 or 2.0-liter EcoBoost at the top. Oh global Escape… how we long for thee!
