Pikes Peak Qualifying And Practice Suspended Following Fatal Motorcyle Accident

Qualifying and practice sessions for the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb have been suspended following a fatal motorcycle accident near the end of the course.

Carl Sorensen, 39, was killed when his Ducati 848 Superbike went over a cliff between Devil’s Playground and the mountain’s summit. Details on the crash are currently scarce, however reports indicate Sorensen went over the cliff just before 9:00 a.m. ET.

“There was an incident today during the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb practice,” race organizers said in a prepared statement. “We have no further information at this time.”

The accident marks the sixth fatal crash at Pikes Peak since it was first held in 1916. Sorensen is also the second motorcycle to die at the event in as many years after 54-year old Bobby Goodin went over the edge of the hill in 2014.

PPIHC organizers have yet to say when practice and qualifying may resume.
