Carlos Lago – the charismatic former host of Motor Trend‘s “Ignition” series on YouTube – departed from the California publication back in May in order to go to work for Edmunds. He will undoubtedly be missed – not only by his former coworkers, we’re sure, but by we the viewers as well.
But on the whole, Mr. Lago’s departure is shaping up to be not such a bad thing; it might allow former racing driver Randy Pobst to tackle more episodes of “Ignition” solo like in the video below, wherein he thrashes a 2016 Porsche 911 GT3 RS at a brand new German race resort called Bilsterberg.
The Porsche 911 GT3 RS, says Mr. Pobst, is as close as one can get to a true race car that’s legal to drive on public roads. And, he remarks, it’s surprisingly comfortable and easy to live with.
Granted, Pobst was already an unabashed fan of the run-of-the-mill GT3. But if that car was a torpedo, the Porsche 911 GT3 RS is a heat-seeking missile; it’s lighter, thanks to a magnesium roof, razor-thin lightweight rear window material, and other picky considerations. It also has a wider rear track, makes more aerodynamic downforce, and produces more power: 500 versus 475 HP.
In fact, just about the only arguably negative observation that Pobst is able to make about the 2016 Porsche 911 GT3 RS is that it’s prone to oversteer, particularly while some amount of trail-throttle is applied. He attributes this partly to the ZF-supplied rear-wheel steering (a.k.a. “Active Kinematics Control“) system, which pivots the rear wheels either into or out of the steering direction based on vehicle speed.
But hey, what’s not to like?
