Tesla Roadster To Receive New Battery Pack Giving It 400-Mile Range

In July Tesla motors revealed its next model beyond the impending Model X crossover will be a compact sedan designed to take the electrically-powered fight to the BMW 3-series called the Model 3. But the Model X and the Model 3 aren’t the only pieces of big news to come front Tesla recently. CEO Elon Musk also revealed to Auto Express that the company is working on updating their first model, the Tesla Roadster, with a better battery back.

“The Roadster had an old generation battery,” Musk said. “We’ll upgrade it to a new generation battery pack and it should have a range of about 400 miles, which will allow you to drive from LA to San Francisco non-stop.”

The original Tesla Roadster used 53 kWh worth of lithium ion battery cells to store enough energy for the sports car, which is based on a Lotus Elise, to travel a total of 245 miles. Musk did not say if any other updates besides the upgraded battery are in store for the Roadster in the future.
