Classic Porsche Cars And Drivers Tour The Sights Of China

Tens of thousands of residents all over China recently got an up-close look at a few classic Porsche cars as they participated in the 1,000 km Top City Classic Rally China.

Historically, there’s not been much interest in classic cars of any marque in China. Porsche was keenly aware of that going in to the Top City Classic Rally, putting their best foot forward by sending a 1981 911 SC Targa and a 1985 911 Carrera 3.2 Cabriolet to the front line to act as ambassadors of the brand.

Judging from the reception, it was a successful move.

Overall, 27 different classic machines participated in the rally, from classic Porsche cars, to historical examples from Skoda, Volkswagen, and others. It kicked off with a parade in Beijing, passed through vast orchards and mountainous regions, and made it out to the Great Wall, before finally ending in Shanghai. Tens of thousands of Chinese citizens stood by to receive the classic Porsche cars, snapping photos, and looking on as the Top City Classic Rally China came to a close.

Chinese schoolchildren even presented the drivers paintings they’d made of their cars as the drivers were departing. Said Head of the Porsche Museum Achim Stejskal: “It was very impressive to see the reactions of people along the way. Our participation in this event was another important step for us to arouse fascination for sports cars and raise the image of the Porsche brand in China through history.”
