Reportedly, there may be a road-going hypercar based on Audi’s R18 e-tron quattro LMP1 race car in 2016, called the Audi R10. Along with the Bugatti Veyron, Audi R8, Porsche 918, and Lamborghini – well, every Lamborghini – that’s a lot of supercar under the Volkswagen Group’s belt.
According to The Sun Daily, the Audi R10 has already been approved for development. It’s rumored to receive a twin-turbo 6.0 liter V10 making in excess of 800 horsepower, although that powerplant could also possibly be coupled with an electric motor for a hybrid powertrain pumping out closer to 1000 HP. The chassis will be a super light carbon fiber monocoque, and of course, we can expect a lot of aerodynamic and chassis elements to carry over from the R18 e-tron quattro race car.
Originally, it was believed that the Audi R10 would get a hybrid-diesel powertrain similar to that in the R18, as well. But those in-the-know suggest that’s been scrapped in favor of a conventional petrol motor.
The Audi R10 will – according to our source – be a bit larger than the Audi R8, while the price will likely approach or surpass the Porsche 918’s $825,000 price tag.
As for performance, your guess is as good as ours.
