Next Generation Ford Super Duty Trucks Confirmed To Go Aluminum Like 2015 F-150

In not so surprising news, Ford says their next generation of Super Duty pickups (2016?) will feature aluminum bodies like the 2015 Ford F-150. Ford going all in on aluminum on the half-ton, three-quarter and one-ton pickups were destined to get the same.

Ford’s Raj Nair, head of global product development, recently told Detroit Free Press the next-generation super-duty pickup will feature an aluminum body. This makes a lot of sense  with all the work the engineers have already done on how to use the new material. Plus, it pushes Ford’s “aluminum edge” to its greatest potential.

The all-new aluminum 2015 Ford F-150 gets many benefits from the material. These benefits include lighter weight, better payload and improved MPG. All of these benefits translate to the larger Super Duty trucks.

One of the areas of concern for some is the strength of aluminum. Considering that a half-ton simply doesn’t face the same wear and tear that a heavy duty truck does, this is a valid concern. Yet, as Ford proved when torture testing the 2015 F-150, the aluminum can handle the workload.

Currently the leader in heavy duty towing and payload, Ford’s Super Duty lineup will make good use of the aluminum. When the next generation, using aluminum, comes out, Ford will likely raise the bar on capability yet again.
