Step Right Up, Volkswagen Announces 2015 Golf R Pre-Order

Volkswagen hot-hatch enthusiasts rejoice, and prepare to celebrate on January 8th, 2015. Because that’s when Volkswagen will begin accepting pre-orders for the 2015 Volkswagen Golf R, the GTI’s brawnier brother.

The pre-order quantity is limited to 500 models, and each model will be identical to one another. The Golf R pre-order units will be painted in Lapiz Blue Metallic and feature the following equipment:

  • 2.0-liter TSI engine making 292 horsepower
  • 4Motion all-wheel drive
  • Six-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission
  • 19-inch “Cadiz” aluminum-alloy wheels and summer performance tires
  • Bi-Xenon headlights with LED Daytime Running Lights
  • DCC adaptive damping system
  • Park Distance Control
  • Navigation system
  • Fender Premium Audio System

Not only will buyers receive one of the first Golf Rs, but VW is also including a numbered “Volkswagen Driver Gear R” accessory kit. It features a handful of bonus goodies such as a Volkswagen R watch, a stainless-steel keychain and a VIN-specific certificate to mark a particular Golf R as one of the first 500. Each item is also serialized for each owner.

Let us remind you why you may want to snag a Golf R before Volkswagen opens up a waiting list. The 292-horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque being sent through all four wheels is not only 36 horsepower and 37 pound-feet more than that of the previous generation, but the newest Golf R is considerably more efficient, with fuel economy jumping three miles per gallon from 27 MPG, to 30 MPG highway. Hardcore drivers can also take solitude in knowing the ESC Sport Stability system may now be completely turned off for those inevitable track days that owners will want to take the hatchback to.

All that’s required to secure your own Golf R is a $500 reservation fee that is applied to the final sale price of the vehicle at the time of payment. After the first 500 pre-order units are gone (and we’re pretty positive they’ll go quickly), Volkswagen will open up a waiting list should any pre-orders be canceled or not go through.

The final sale price of the pre-order Golf R is $39,090 plus the $820 destination fee. Those interested in the pre-order program should go to the Volkswagen Golf R site for more information.
