Audi A3, S3 Sedans Receive Top Honors From NHTSA, IIHS

The Audi A3 received the coveted Top Safety Pick+ designation from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety last December, and has now followed it up by receiving the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s highest possible five star rating in its New Car Assessment Program.

Audi’s A3 is the only European premium compact segment model tested to receive both a 5-star NHTSA rating and IIHS Top Safety Pick+ rating. The all-new small sedan was selected for Top Safety Pick+ honors for Audi’s pre sense front system, which “helps detect when the driver is making an emergency maneuver and prepares the vehicle and its occupant-restraint systems in advance of a possible collision”, Audi says. The tech is available when ordered with the car’s Advanced Technology Package, which also adds Audi active lane assist and Audi adaptive cruise control.

The IIHS only gives Top Safety Pick+ honors to vehicles with a front-crash prevention system that received either a ‘good’ or ‘acceptable’ rating in its small-overlap front-crash test and a ‘good’ rating in each of the Institute’s four other crashworthiness evaluations, consisting of moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests.
