Tesla Motors Working On Robotic Snake-Like Automatic Charger

On the wish list of present and future Tesla Motors customers, we would guess that the Model X crossover, Model 3 sedan, a higher capacity battery pack, and even faster chargers are among the top few items. A self-deploying robotic charging cord, meanwhile, is probably not.

But the lack of customer demand hasn’t stopped Tesla Motors from trying to work one out. (Boy, they really are just like every other Silicon Valley enterprise, aren’t they?) Autoblog reports that the automatic, self-coupling, snake-like charging cable was hinted at during the Model S “D” unveiling, and was recently confirmed by Tesla Motors’ enigmatic leader himself: Elon Musk.

Here is his December 31st Tweet:

Btw, we are actually working on a charger that automatically moves out from the wall & connects like a solid metal snake. For realz.

Shortly thereafter, another Tweet clarified that the charger would also be backward compatible with all past Model S cars, not just future iterations.

Although there isn’t a clear need for the new self-deploying charger, we have to admit: it may be the coolest frivolous automotive innovation we’ve ever heard of. We’re just hoping they name it something catchy, like “Solid Snake.”
