Volkswagen Adds Gasoline Engine To Fuel-Efficient Polo BlueMotion

BlueMotion badging on a Volkswagen vehicle typically denotes a diesel engine under the hood, but in the German automaker is offering a gasoline engine in its latest iteration of the subcompact Polo BlueMotion. The petrol motor in question is the optional 1.0-liter, 3-cylinder TSI engine making 94 bhp while still returning an incredible 68.9 mpg on the UK’s mpg scale. Joining the petrol motor is the 1.4-liter 3-cylinder TDI diesel engine that makes 74 bhp, making up for the power loss with a claimed 91 mpg.

A five-speed manual gearbox is standard for the BlueMotion with either engine. The model carries on its frugality in fuel consumption with other nifty tricks, like a wind-cheating bodykit made up of specialized front and rear bumpers, side skirts and spoiler. The little Volkswagen is also equipped with the “Think Blue Trainer” system, which analyzes driving habits, and produces tips via the standard touchscreen infotainment system to help produce even greater fuel economy results.

Prices start at £14,730 for the 1.0L TSI and £15,795 1.4L TDI three-door models in the U.K. market. Five-door versions carry a £630 premium.
