Rumored Porsche 717 To Crash The Pure-EV Market

While we were as disappointed as the next Porsche aficionado to learn about the axing of the 718 roadster project, something else has come along – something potentially much, much better.

It’s called the Porsche 717, and it’s rumored to be an electrified four-door sports sedan with all-wheel drive, 300 miles of electric range, and styling more 911-esque than Panamera-like. The UK’s CAR magazine wrote a piece on the secretive Porsche-in-development, saying that it’s meant to fire right back at the Tesla Model S – and leave it in the dust, to boot.

See, unlike the dual-motor all-wheel drive system in the “D”-badged Tesla Model S, the Porsche 717 will have four electric motors – one per wheel. Like with the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Electric Drive, the quadruplet motors will allow for full torque-vectoring, and undoubtedly mind-numbing performance.

CAR magazine’s anonymous sources claim that the Porsche 717 is scheduled for a 2019 launch, and will be built on the Volkswagen Group’s new MSB architecture. Whether or not that’s wishful thinking, we the automotive enthusiasts of the world can’t wait to see the Porsche 717 become a reality, and rattle the very exciting new segment of performance EVs.
