The 2016 Audi A6 has received the best-possible Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The recently revised luxury four-door had already achieved the highest rating of ‘good’ in the side, roof strength and moderate-overlap front crash tests, but had yet to undergo the IIHS’s challenging small-overlap test.
After receiving a rating of ‘good’ in the small-overlap test, the A6 was bumped up to a Top Safety Pick+ rating. It joins other large luxury sedans that have received the designation including the Hyundai Genesis, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Infiniti Q70, Volvo S80, Lexus RC and Acura RLX.
Only 2016 A6s produced after January 2015 will have been built with Audi’s newly designed front structure necessary for earning a Top Safety Pick+ grade. Results from the test, which can be seen in the video below, found there would be a small chance of significant injury if this scenario were to play out in the real world.
