2016 Audi A4 Avant Spied Ahead Of Frankfurt Debut

We’ve already seen the next-generation Audi A4 on several different occasions, but until spy shots of the car emerged today, the impending Avant station wagon variant was still missing in action.

Auto Express caught a heavily camouflaged version of the roomier A4 out testing ahead of its planned debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show this September. Much like the A4 sedan, there appears to be few surprises in store for the Avant in regards to styling. Audi has taken an evolutionary approach with the standard four-door, and will likely do the same for the Avant.

The A4 Avant will ride on the Volkswagen Group’s MLB Evo architecture, which is lighter than the previous MLB platform thanks to its mixed material construction, contributing to a rumored weight loss of up to 100 kg. The platform can also accommodate multiple powertrain configurations, including hybrid/electric setups.

Both sedan and Avant versions of the next-gen A4 will likely be offered with six-cylinder and four-cylinder engines. We can also look to Audi’s most recent hybrids, like the Q7 e-tron, for hints at what might be to come in the A4. The A4 will combine gasoline and diesel combustion engines with electric motors for added performance and efficiency, however unlike current Audi hybrids, the A4 is said to introduce the brand’s new ‘e-quattro’ all-wheel drive system.

The A4 Avant will debut alongside the sedan at the Frankfurt Motor Show this September before going on sale in early 2016. Until then, you can check out the spy shots here.
