‘Lincoln Continental’ Name Inspired Its Design Team

When it first launched back in 1939, the Lincoln Continental wasn’t only a big car; it quickly became a revered nameplate, as well. The new concept at New York, which is confirmed for a 2016 launch, is nothing if not bold and imposing.

As Autoblog reports, that presence possessed by the new concept may have as much to do with the Lincoln Continental name as anything else.

“The moment that we told [the designers], it was amazing. They totally got it,” said Lincoln President Kumar Galhotra. “You can’t let it pull yourself back too far in history, but you’ve got to design a car that lives up to the name.”

The designers of this new 2016 Lincoln Continental did indeed restrain themselves in terms of how retrospective the look is. It’s a big, square thing with obvious nods to the name’s origins, but it’s kept simultaneously modern by the wheels, headlamp and taillight graphics, sleek side mirrors, and subtle character lines.

The design of the 2016 Lincoln Continental is every bit as important to the car’s success as a flagship as its content – maybe more so. Thankfully, the Lincoln team had a rich history to draw upon.
