Tanner Foust Introduces His 900HP VW Passat Formula Drift Car

Tanner Foust is returning to the Formula Drift arena this year after a four-year hiatus from the race series, and he’s bringing an all-new car along with him. Volkswagen has penned the two-time Formula D champion an insane rear-wheel drive VW Passat, which will make its competition debut at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas on June 4.

VW calls Tanner’s new drift machine a Passat, but it’s far from the pedestrian sedan you see on public roads. Not only is it rear-wheel drive, it’s powered by a 7.4-liter V8 pumping out 700 naturally aspirated horsepowers. That wasn’t enough to quench Foust’s almost insatiable thirst for power, so they strapped a 200 shot of nitrous to the motor, making it good for a certifiably insane 900 ponies.

Foust has been competing in the Red Bull Global RallyCross series since 2010, where he earned himself three championships in 2010, 2011 and 2012. This is in addition to the Formula Drift titles he earned in 2007 and 2008, which made him the first and only Formula D driver to earn series titles back to back. Hell be looking for similar success when he returns to the series this year, which he is running in addition to his usual spot in GRC.
