Tesla Motors Home And Utility Batteries Being Announced On April 30th

We previously reported on a Tweet from Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk, in which he alluded to a coming April 30th product reveal – importantly, a product that isn’t a car. We then went on to speculate that this unveiling would most likely be a rumored line of home and utility batteries from the maker of electric cars.

According to the latest from Automotive News, that assumption would seem to be correct; an email from Tesla Head of Investor Relations Jeffrey Evanson, reportedly sent out yesterday to investors and analysts, said that the company “will explain the advantages of our solutions and why past battery options were not compelling.”

Obviously, we can safely assume that these home and utility batteries will be based on lithium-ion cell chemistry, but beyond that, no details are available. CEO Elon Musk had previously alluded to the possibility of a line of home utility batteries as far back as February, when in an earnings conference call, he remarked: “We are going to unveil the Tesla home battery, the consumer battery that would be for use in people’s houses or businesses fairly soon.”
