A Possible VW Golf R400 Test Mule Has Been Spotted Publicly

With its promised 400+ metric horsepower and 4Motion all-wheel drive, the Volkswagen Golf R400 might just be poised to be the one thing that everyone in the world can agree upon.

Previously, we had reported on two possible confirmations of such a car making it into production; one turned out to be a false positive, while the second seemed much more concrete. But never have we been so reassured as when we saw spy photographs of a possible Golf R400 test mule on the Motor Trend website.

Wearing the regular “R” badges of the current Volkswagen hot hatch king, the test mule gives itself away as something else entirely with a massive rear wing, large-diameter wheels with low-profile tires, drilled and slotted brake rotors, and a unique front chin spoiler. Seeing as the 2015 Golf R just launched earlier this year, chances are precisely zero to nada that this could be a simple facelift model.

The (2018) VW Golf R400 will sprint to 60 in just under 4 seconds, on to a top speed of 174 mph – if it’s anything like the concept car. And with a massive volume-specific horsepower output in excess of 200 per liter, it may just make us forget all about the coming Ford Focus RS.
