For the fourth consecutive year, Volkswagen is serving as a presenting sponsor of Discovery Channel’s surprisingly popular Shark Week. As a result, Scott Speed’s VW Beetle GRC will be adorned with a special Shark Week livery for the Global Rallycross season opener at Ft. Lauderdale this weekend.
The GRC season opener, set to kick off Sunday, May 31, airs not long before the start of Shark Week on July 5. Discovery has yet to reveal what shows will be on the schedule for this year’s Shark-themed week of programming, however a few different sources have claimed this year’s Shark Week will be the biggest yet.
Speed is looking forward to the season opener at Ft. Lauderdale and is happy to be running No. 41 in 2015, his father’s former racing number.
“My father raced with No. 41 in karts when I was younger so it’s pretty special to me,” said Speed. “I have only had the option to choose the No. 41 twice in my career and was able to win championships each time. Hopefully it continues to bring me luck in 2015!”
Speed, along with teammate Tanner Foust, will compete in all twelve regular season GRC races this year in addition to the Summer X Games event in Austin, TX. Speed won the event last year and will looking to defend his title in this year’s edition of the annual extreme sports competition.
