Tesla Model S Premium Center Console Cancelled For Certain Trims

For those Tesla Model S owners waiting impatiently for a more enhanced cup-holding experience, we have a bit of bad news; the premium center console option for the electric sedan has been cancelled for two of the car’s interior trim options.

Website Teslarati reports that the automaker has cancelled the premium center console option for those Tesla Model S examples outfitted with either the Carbon Fiber or Obeche Wood interior trims. Those with a Piano Black interior can still receive the premium console, which adds an enclosed storage bin and two attractive-looking cupholders.

The premium center console was first announced back in March of 2014, and then delayed several times. Ultimately, the automaker was made to cite quality issues as the reason that the enhanced Tesla Model S console was cancelled for two of the car’s available trims. Teslarati reports that one can still order a premium rear console in any trim, as the company contracted with a different supplier for that bit of additional storage.

The Tesla Model S is no stranger to quality issues; it was precisely because of shoddy supplier pieces that early reviews of the sedan were generally negative. While it would be easy – and perhaps justified – to criticize the automaker for failing to properly outfit a $70,000+ luxury car in the first place, we have to bear in mind that Tesla Motors doesn’t have the benefit of decades of experience working with suppliers that so many other car companies possess.

But maybe it would behove the automaker to catch itself before it makes promises it might not prove able to deliver on, as we anticipate droves of frustrated Tesla Model S owners are out there right about now.
