Dodge Challenger Drag Pak Unveiled, Will Compete In NHRA Sportsman Class

Mopar has unveiled the new Dodge Challenger Drag Pak, which will go racing with customer teams in the NHRA’s Sportsman class. For the first time ever, Mopar is offering the Challenger Drag Pak with the choice of either a 354-cubic-inch Gen III HEMI engine or a naturally aspirated 426-cubic-inch motor, giving customers with differing preferences more variety.

The 354 Hemi boasts a cast-iron block, forged steel crank shaft, a special Mopar camshaft, and custom Mopar engine calibration. The 426 engine, meanwhile, is based around a Mopar aluminum block and features steel cylinder liners and aluminum heads. Both motors will be mated with a race-prepped automatic transmission, which Dodge says has been upgraded over the outgoing Drag Pak.

There’s also new suspension under the Challenger Drag Pak, with a unique Mopar K-Member out front with double adjustable compression and rebound struts. The rear features special four-link suspension with Panhard bar, a 4-inch solid rear axle with an aluminum 9-inch third member, shocks with adjustable compression and rebound settings and an anti-roll bar. Additionally, the rear axle mounting has been strengthened from the previous generation Drag Pak to improve the car’s launch.

As for the Drag Pak’s appearance, Mopar says the 354 and 426 engines will carry a unique graphic identification package. The supercharged cars will feature a Mopar Blue stripe and a “354 Supercharged” graphic insignia, while the naturally aspirated Drag Pak sports a horizontal black stripe with ‘426 HEMI’ graphics. There’s also 15-inch Mopar wheels with Hoosier drag radials and slotted front and rear brake rotors with racing-spec calipers.

Inside, all Drag Pak Challengers will come equipped with a full roll cage fabricated to NHRA specifications. The dash won’t be unfamiliar to those who have been inside a Challenger, however a Mopar gauge pack, lightweight racing seats, a safety net and five-point harnesses set it apart from standard Challengers.

The Mopar Dodge Challenger Drag Pak order book will open on July 23, the same day the Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals will kickoff in downtown Golden, Colorado. Models equipped with the 426 HEMI will start at $99,426, with the 354 supercharged race car commanding a pricetag of $109,354.
