Honda Expands Takata Airbag Recall To 2.3 Million Accords And Civics

American Honda Motor Co. is expanding its recall of the Honda Accord and Honda Civic over potentially faulty airbags. Part of the now-infamous Takata airbag fiasco that has plagued many automakers, no matter the brand or country of origin, the recall follows a similar campaign for driver-side airbag inflators.

The defect: affected vehicles are equipped with a passenger-side frontal air bag that may be susceptible to moisture intrusion and other factors, including manufacturing variability that, over time, could cause the inflator to rupture.

The hazards: in the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger’s air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the passenger seat occupant or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.

Affected vehicles:

MANUFACTURER MAKE MODEL MODEL YEAR PRODUCTION RANGE
HONDA AMERICAN MOTOR CO. HONDA ACCORD 2003-2007 AUGUST 16, 2002 – AUGUST 28, 2007
HONDA AMERICAN MOTOR CO. HONDA CIVIC 2001-2005 APRIL 25, 2000 – SEPTEMBER 2, 2005

Number of vehicles affected: 2,300,000 (expanded).

The fix: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger air bag inflator, free of charge.

The recall is expected to begin July 13, 2015.
