Tandy, Pilet Lead GTLM Porsche 1-2 At Road America

Porsche’s Nick Tandy and Patrick Pilet raced from the back of the grid in their No. 911 Porsche 911 RSR to take the win during Sunday’s Continental Tire Road Race Showcase at Road America. The duo led a 1-2 finish for Porsche Motorsport North America, with teammates Joerg Bergmeister and Earl Bamber crossing the finish line second in their No. 912 entry.

Pilet was forced to start from the rear of the GTLM field after the team switched engines earlier in the weekend. He quickly made up for any lost time, charging his way through the field up to third within the first hour of the race. The No. 911 car stayed near the front of the pack for the remainder of the race, with Pilet making the final pass for the lead on Pierra Kaffer in the No. 62 Risi Competizione Ferrari 458 Italia on Lap 56.

Pole sitter Bamber got the No. 912 Porsche RSR off to a strong start, leading the race’s opening laps before taking his first pit stop. He and Bergmeister’s bid for the win was thwarted when a hood pin came loose on the No. 912 car, costing the team valuable time in the pits that they were unable to make up on the track.

Kaffer and co-driver Giancarlo Fisichella followed the Porsche pairing across the finish line to take third. Corvette Racing’s Jan Magnussen and Antonio Garcia claimed fourth, while BMW Team RLL’s Bill Auberlen and Dirk Werner rounded out the top five.
