The most popular car color choice is black, so not surprisingly, the most popular color on the most popular vehicle in North America, the Ford F-150, is also black.
According to data obtained by vehicle sales and research site Autotrader.com between January and June 2015, the most searched for color for the 2015 Ford F-150 is Tuxedo Black. Paul Czornij, North American coatings designer with BASF, a paint supplier for F-150, says this is because of black’s association to luxury cars.
“Black is a color of mystery, strength and boldness, and it’s very common on high-end vehicles because there’s that projection of power and strength,” Czornij explained.
The popular color overall may be Black, but Czornij also says white has grown in popularity recently and is most popular on high-end King Ranch and Platinum F-150 models. Czornij attributes white’s popularity with its association to high-end laptops and smartphones, saying consumers see it as a less utilitarian choice than black.
The popularity of certain colors also changes with region as it does model by model. For example, magnetic and Bronze Fire are more popular on King Ranch and Lariat models on the west coast, likely because customers associate those earthy tones with naturally occurring colors in nature.
