C7 Corvette Z06 Edges Out McLaren 650S To Win Car & Driver Lightning Lap 2015

Each year Car & Driver heads out to Virginia International Raceway for its annual Lightning Lap test, which pits some of the industry’s fastest cars against one another around one of America’s most famous race circuits. This year C&D had quite the array of cars on offer, so they split them up into three groups based on their price points and went wild, lapping everything from a Miata to a Lamborghini Huracan.

Despite being in only the second highest pricing group, Chevy’s balls-to-the-wall C7 Corvette Z06 walked away with the fastest lap time, posting a lap time of 2:44.6. The only thing even within striking distance of the Z06 was the $295,035 McLaren 650S Spider, which lapped the 3.2-mile VIR circuit in 2:45.8 – still nearly a full second slower. Third fastest was the $240,745 Lamborghini Huracan with a time of 2:47.5.

The C7 Corvette Z06 is often said to be the ultimate performance bargain, but C&D’s latest Lightning Lap findings all but make that opinion fact. There’s just one issue we see with the test, and it’s that Dodge’s recently unveiled Viper ACR wasn’t on hand for it. Like the Z06, the Viper also offers plenty of performance for good value, and it’s made short work of the Corvette in the past, so it may stand the best chance at dethroning it of its unofficial VIR production car record.

We sense a comparison test coming on, C&D, don’t you?
